Certified according to ATEX directives: Robust headlamps and torches of the EX and iL series contribute to operational safety

Solingen, April 2021 – The mobile lights in the Ledlenser EX and iL series have been specially developed for use in factories where explosive gases, vapours or dust can occur. Even small pulses can trigger critical situations here – which is why electronic and electrical devices must have protection in accordance with the EU standard ATEX (ATmosphères EXplosible). Ledlenser offers a total of ten certified lamps to provide a brilliant light for a wide range of work in the respective hazard zones. This is ensured by the patented focusing system – a first for explosion-protected lamps. Many companies are uncertain when it comes to procuring the necessary products. “Often, company managers are not even aware that an ATEX directive applies to their company, as explosive atmospheres can only occur at their premises in the event of a possible incident,” says Alexander Isphording, Product Manager at Ledlenser. “Others don’t know which category they belong to.” The lighting experts from Solingen have therefore compiled a comprehensive brochure in which the most important criteria are clearly listed.

The right light depending on the hazard

Numerous industries fall into the category of “hazardous locations”, e.g. chemical plants, oil and gas production facilities, filling stations, refineries, but also sawmills, distilleries and bakeries. According to the frequency and duration of an explosion hazard, ATEX divides the work areas into a total of six zones. Zones 0, 1, 2 refer to a possible formation of explosive gases, vapours or mists, the other three (20, 21, 22) designate areas where flammable dust clouds can lead to an explosion. Ledlenser has designed its ATEX products for a combination of these zones. The lamps are also certified according to IECEx, an international certification system for EX equipment that specifies that they do not produce flammable sparks or heat.

All models have a temperature rating of T4 or 135°C, as electrical equipment that produces high heat on its surface can also be potential ignition sources.

The EX series has been designed for use in work areas where explosive atmospheres occur predominantly or occasionally over time (zones 0/20 or 1/21), the iL series for zones 2/22, where this hazard normally exists only for short periods. All lamp models are suitable for the highest gas and dust groups (IIC/IIIC) and are waterproof (IP68).

The EX and iL series each include two headlamps and three torches. The EX7 handlamp, EX4 penlight and EXH8 headlamp are suitable for use in zone 0/20. Identical in size and operation to the EX7 are the EX7R, iL7 and iL7R models. All four torches can be operated even with work gloves thanks to the large magnetic switch. The patented1 Advanced Focus System developed by Ledlenser enables a smooth transition from homogeneous close-range light to sharply focused long-distance light. The four headlamps in the EX and iL series are also equipped with the unique reflector lens. Users can optimally illuminate both the near and far range with just one lamp.

Users who need a fully charged, ready-to-go lamp at all times benefit from the battery-powered EX7R and EXH8R models. In the wall-mounted charging tray, the lamps are fully charged at all times and can be removed with a flick of the wrist. This makes them perfect for the changing rooms or the plant security office; thanks to the car adapter, they can also be used in trucks. In addition, the rechargeable battery reduces running costs as fewer disposable batteries have to be bought and disposed of as waste. The EX7R is the first rechargeable and focusable torch approved for zone 1/21. The charging tray included in the scope of delivery charges the lithium-ion battery quickly and safely. The robust lamps are characterised by a very long battery life. The EXH8R headlamp – like the EX7R – has a runtime of 45 hours in low-power mode. The five models in the iL series also include two lamps with rechargeable lithium-ion batteries.
